This week's assignment in Danni Dawson's portrait painting class was a color study of red on red.  So I set up a red still life: a scarlet carnation in a red Mexican vase with a red tomato and dark red nectarine.  I had a great difficulty on account of the close values between the objects and the carmine red cloth, which I had to change to a dark indigo after a struggle.  After I painted in the highlights of the window and lamp on the vase, tomato, and nectarine, the painting suddenly came alive!
